It’s Morbin’ time! If you happened to have not kept up on the Marvel news from the past few months, you may have missed one of the best and worst campaigns to bring a failed movie back to life. That movie happens to be the Jared Leto-led Morbius. The film crashed and burned at the box office, and for some odd reason, the internet got ahold of it in an odd way. Memes of Morbius began to dominate the internet, all with the catchphrase, “It’s Morbin’ time!” Leto does not say that at all in the movie, but even the Academy Award-winning actor got in on the joke on his Twitter reading a script that said Morbius 2: It’s Morbin Time. Well, if you missed all that and want to know what the fuss is all about, Morbius is now streaming on Netflix.

Morbius made $163 million in worldwide box office numbers. While that may not seem like a small amount of money, it had a budget of around $80 million, making it one of the biggest flops of 2022. Also, the film went through the previously mentioned meme craze, leaving the studios to give it a second go in theaters. Based on the popularity of the meme that dominated most social media platforms, the idea would be that the popularity would result in some bigger financial gain. However, the end result of the re-release was a sad extra $300,000 total added. The film still holds a 15% critic on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the worst-reviewed Marvel film ever made. However, audiences loved it far more, giving it a 71% approval rating, which isn’t terrible. Granted, it’s a Sony/Marvel collaboration, but it still holds Marvel in its name. Fans can watch Morbius on Netflix right now to decide if it was truly that bad.

Morbius follows Dr. Michael Morbius as he and his surrogate brother, Lucian (deemed Milo), both have a rare blood disease. Michael grows up to be a renowned scientist and refuses the Nobel Prize for his work in artificial blood. He has captured dozens of vampire bats from Costa Rica, which he is studying for a cure. He plans to splice the DNA of the bats with his own, effectively curing him. He tells his brother Milo of this illegal experiment, which leads to Milo funding the experiment. Michael Morbius is successful, changing him into a living vampire. He kills the crew on the boat that made the expedition after feeling bloodlust for the first time and erases the CTV footage of what transpired. Morbius then travels back to New York, where he is arrested and reunited with his brother Milo, who is angry that Michael had not used the experiment to cure him too. Without ruining the rest of the film, you can watch Morbius on Netflix right now.

Quite honestly, the cast of Morbius should have led to a far more successful movie. Jared Leto leads the pack as Michael Morbius. Matt Smith is his brother Lucien aka Milo. Adria Arjona is Martine Bancroft, Jarred Harris is Emil Nichols, Tyrese Gibson is Simon Stroud, and Al Amdigal is Agent Rodriguez. The film had quite a complementary cast, though the film just didn’t appeal to the world as it was intended to. Matt Smith commented on the movie being a flop, and just simply told everyone to move on. According to Smith, “For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and… It is what it is.” At least he is not letting the “failure” of the film get to him. He is now starring in House of the Dragon, so things have certainly worked out. Morbius is meant to connect the Spider-Man Sony/Marvel universe, but we are not sure if Jared Leto will be welcomed back anytime soon. For now, everyone can stream Morbius on Netflix and decide if it’s worth a sequel.
